A DHS official has testified before congress regarding continued Russian efforts that have “focused on identifying divisive issues and sowing discord.” U.S. elections and critical infrastructure remain key targets and a part of Russia’s “long-term campaign objectives.” This testimony precedes by one week President Trump’s meeting with Putin, where Russian interference will likely be subject to discussion. The testimony also included fears and ongoing preparation around the 2018 midterm elections, that have benefited from $400 million in investments for election assistance and infrastructure. While no major attempts have been uncovered (or published), there are risks that vulnerabilities uncovered by hackers in the 2016 election may remain unfound and unfixed before the elections.
