“The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to escalate its campaign to isolate and pressure the regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela by adding the government to the US’s state sponsors of terror list, according to The Washington Post. Countries on the list have been found by the US secretary of state ‘to have repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism.’ The four main kinds of sanctions that result from designation are ‘restrictions on US foreign assistance; a ban on defense exports and sales; certain controls over exports of dual-use items; and miscellaneous financial and other restrictions.’ North Korea, Iran, Syria, and Sudan are the only countries on the list, which critics say has been used inconsistently.”
