US expected to brand Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group

On Monday, the US is expected to officially recognize Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization. The IRGC is a military branch created after the 1979 Iranian Revolution with the aim of defending the country’s theocratic system. Analysts warn that by adding it to the list of terror groups, the Trump administration would complicate US relations with Iraq, Lebanon and other countries with links to the IRGC.

The Washington Post first reported on the expected announcement on Sunday. Reuters and The Associated Press have since then confirmed the story based on statements from anonymous sources in the US government. In response to the reports, Iranian lawmakers issued a statement in which they said that the US government would “regret this inappropriate and idiotic action,” while Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said the move would be “anther US disaster.”
