A new report by Vectra sheds light on the growing risk to health care organizations stemming from a combination of factors, including the increased adoption of Internet-of-things (IoT) devices, continued reliance on legacy systems, and shortcomings in terms of network segmentation and access controls.
In addition, healthcare organizations often lack a robust strategy to mitigate such risks. According to Chris Morales of Vectra “[h]ealthcare IT security teams are often kept in the dark and behind the curve when it comes to changes in infrastructure” like the connection of new IoT devices, while “[g]aps in IT security policies and procedures make it easier for healthcare staffs to make unintentional errors that result in exposure and increased security risk,” like mistakes in terms of data handling and storage.
