The US Navy recently used a new anti-drone weapon to take down an Iranian UAV in the Persian Gulf. Last Thursday, US President Trump said the drone was downed after it flew within 1,000 yards of a US warship in the Gulf.
The vessel in question was the USS Boxer, which is supplied with an MRZR Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System (LMADIS), a new system that uses a jammer to disrupt signals from drones. USNI News reports that this system was used to carry out the “first known kill by a new generation of electronic warfare and directed energy weapons” by the US.
The downing of the Iranian drone, which was denied by Iran, occurred one month after Iran shot down a US military “spy” drone that it claimed had been flying over its southern territory near the Gulf. The US confirmed the downing of the drone, but said it had happened in international air space over the Strait of Hormuz.
