Even though the Taliban announced last week that disagreements between the group and the United States government over the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan had been resolved, the latest round of peace talks in Qatar (the 8th in total) ended on Monday without a peace deal.
US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad described the negotiations as “productive, ” while Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said they were “long and useful.” Neither of the parties elaborated on the discussions.
In previous negotiations both sides have broadly agreed that a final peace agreement would result in a withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan under condition that the country will not be used by militant groups to launch attacks against the US and allied countries.
