More than two weeks after the Indian government stripped Kashmir of its autonomous status and revoked a ban on property purchases by non-residents, tensions in the disputed region continue to escalate. On Tuesday, several people were killed in clashes between Indian and Pakistani border forces, although both countries provided conflicting reports about the casualties.
Indian-controlled Kashmir has been subjected to a lockdown and a communications blackout since the government revoked its special status. The controversial decision has led to daily demonstrations to which authorities have responded by arresting thousands of protesters.
On Tuesday, the government of Pakistan also announced that it will request the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to weigh in on the disputed region, which is divided between the two countries but fully claimed by both.
