EU leaders: We won’t follow Trump’s Huawei ban

One day after US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency over telecom threats, thereby enabling the US government to extend its ban on Huawei technology to the private sector, the leaders of Germany, the Netherlands and France announced that their countries are not planning to copy the US government’s ban on the use of Huawei equipment for the establishment of national 5G networks.

However, a Dutch newspaper reported that the country’s General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) has launched an investigation into reports that Huawei could have planted a “backdoor” on the network of one of the country’s largest telecommunications firms. Both Huawei and the Chinese government have consistently denied allegations of cyber espionage.
