Mynamar rebel groups and the military government have signed a ceasefire.
The ethnic rebel group Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northeastern Myanmar announced a cease-fire with the military following talks mediated by China. The TNLA surrendered control of several strategic towns and highways linking to China, and in return the military agreed to halt ground operations and air-strikes in the group’s remaining territory. The deal comes ahead of elections scheduled for December 28, which critics argue are an attempt by the military government to legitimize its rule by sidelining main opposition parties.
