U.S. President Joe Biden successfully negotiated a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese group Hezbollah on Tuesday. The agreement has now come into effect, beginning at 4am local time on Wednesday. Biden said that the ceasefire will halt almost 14 months of fighting that killed thousands of people. There is hope that the pause will lead to the permanent end of fighting between Hezbollah forces and Israel’s military. Biden stated that the agreement “is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Hezbollah has yet to formally comment on the ceasefire and did not participate in any direct talks during negotiations. The ceasefire will be implemented over 60 days and will be monitored by UN peacekeepers, France, and the U.S. as civilians are gradually allowed to return home.
