In the latest sign that the recent US-Taliban peace talks have strained US-Afghanistan relations, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale told Afghan President Ashraf Ghani that the US will no longer deal with Afghanistan’s security adviser Hamdullah Mohib.

Last Thursday, Mohib not only complained that the US was not being transparent enough about what its negotiators had been discussing with the Taliban, but also personally attacked Zalmay Khalilzad, the chief negotiator for the US, saying that the official did not want to involve Afghanistan in the talks because he is aiming for an important position in an interim government should the peace talks work out.
