Report: Feds Lacks Bioterror Experts

The government will have an increasingly hard time hiring and retaining biologists and others needed to prepare for bioterror threats, a report concludes. The report, being released Tuesday, is based on 30 interviews with officials at five major federal agencies that deal with bioterrorism. It was written by the Partnership for Public Service, a group that promotes civil service careers. The group concluded that the federal government faces numerous difficulties in preparing itself to handle the threat of a biological attack: Demand for biologists and physicians overall is expected to rise, while the number of students who graduate in these fields is not; the government does not pay as well as the private sector does; and many crucial workers will retire over the next several years.
