9 Afghan Police Officers Are Killed in Attack by Insurgents

In the fourth reported attack on Afghan government employees or aid workers in two days, suspected Taliban fighters killed nine police officers in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, government officials announced today. The attack came a day after suspected Taliban fighters attacked a district governor’s house in eastern Afghanistan and killed seven people. Also on Sunday, Taliban fighters took four police officers hostage in another village in eastern Afghanistan and fled into Pakistan, officials said. And, in the north, two Afghans working for a British charity were wounded in an ambush. The attacks come as a slowly intensifying Taliban insurgency is disrupting the delivery of aid in the country’s south and east and demonstrating the weakness of the central government. Full Story
