Nepal Rebels Kill Colonel

Maoist rebels have shot dead a Nepalese army colonel and wounded another, the army says. The attacks came barely a day after the rebels declared an end to a seven-month-old ceasefire. The two men are the highest ranking military officials to have been targeted in seven years of rebel insurgency. Over 7,000 people have so far died in the conflict, in which the rebels have sought to establish a communist republic. On US embassy in Kathmandu has warned that its nationals could be killed or kidnapped by the Maoists. The two army officers were both attacked as they were leaving for work on Wednesday morning. According to the army, Colonel Kiran Basnet was shot five times near his house in Kathmandu and died soon afterwards in hospital. Full Story
