Bugwatch: The joy of patching

At the moment it seems that vendors are releasing patches left, right and centre, and this is proving a logistical nightmare for IT managers. In one week, Microsoft alone can publish as many as five patches or alerts. This is not only logistically challenging, but leads to questions about what patches your organisation needs to be applying and when. The patch management equation is further complicated for IT managers by estimates that there are five to 20 bugs in every 1,000 lines of code in published software. With so many patches being released it’s difficult to stay in control, especially when dealing with thousands of desktops. In some organisations there is no centralised control to let IT managers see which machines have been patched and which have not. This has led to a risky reliance on Windows Update to prompt end-users into installing the necessary patches. But how many people dismiss pop-ups from their PC without reading them? Full Story
