At least five policemen and two civilians have been killed in an attack by Maoist rebels in south-western Nepal, according to security forces. They say about 200 rebels attacked police station early on Sunday in Nawalparasi district. Rebel casualties are not known. About 8,000 people have died in the eight-year-old insurgency aimed at replacing Nepal’s monarchy with a communist republic. The attack took place during Nepal’s main Hindu festival Tihaar, known in India and elsewhere as Diwali. The rebels arrived at the station in vehicles and motorcycles, exchanging fire with police for 30 minutes before setting off a bomb and fleeing, state-run radio said. A street seller and a government worker were killed in the crossfire, it added. The rebels have stepped up violence after breaking a seven-month ceasefire in August. Full Story
