Court rules Pinochet fit for trial

A Chilean appeals court rejected claims yesterday that General Augusto Pinochet was too ill to face charges of murder and kidnapping. The court’s verdict upholds the indictment and house arrest of the 89-year-old former dictator. As police separated foes and supporters of Gen Pinochet, Judge Juan Escobar said: “This appeal has been unanimously rejected”. The ruling will be delivered to the ex-dictator at the Hospital Militar, where he has been interned since Saturday. The charges concern Operation Condor, a plan in the mid-1970s by south American military governments to coordinate the kidnapping and execution of opponents.Full Story
