S. Africa to probe its role in ’86 death of Mozambique’s leader

South Africa will reopen a probe into a 1986 plane crash that killed Mozambique’s founding President Samora Machel at the height of the struggle over South African apartheid, officials said on Thursday. “We believe that it is correct for us to investigate. This is going to be a process where all of our enforcement agencies are going to be involved,” Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula told reporters at parliament. Machel, the liberator of the former Portuguese colony, died with more than 30 others on October 19, 1986, when his Soviet-built jet crashed inexplicably into low hills on the Mozambique-South Africa frontier.Full Story
