Somali town girds for fresh clashes

Tension gripped the Somali town of Jowhar amid fears that Islamic militia planned to attack the last stronghold of the US-backed warlords alliance and shatter a week-long lull in deadly factional clashes, residents and militia commanders said. As hundreds of Islamic fighters headed north from their military camp in Hiilweyne, about 23 kilometres (14 miles) outside Mogadishu, gunmen loyal to the warlords entrenched their positions in Jowhar, about 90 kilometres (55 miles) away, they said.
