One of the bloodiest chapters in Colombia’s recent history is being revisited in a Bogota courtroom: A former justice minister is on trial for allegedly masterminding the assassination of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan. Alberto Santofimio Botero is accused of ordering a hit squad belonging to drug kingpin Pablo Escobar to kill Galan during the 1990 presidential campaign in order to boost his own candidacy and prevent Escobar’s extradition to the United States.
