RSA Security Inc. and VeriSign Inc., makers of software to protect Internet transactions, did not infringe patents held by a retired engineer, a jury decided today. The inventor, Leon Stambler, sued the companies two years ago and sought about $20 million in damages, contending the misuse of three of his patents, awarded since 1998. RSA and VeriSign provide software to ensure safe banking, prescription refills and retail purchasing over the Internet. The information-technology security market is expected to reach $45 billion a year by 2006 from $17 billion in 2001, according to the industry research firm IDC. “I feel I was right” and the facts were misrepresented during the trial, Mr. Stambler said after the federal jury verdict here. His lawyer, Maryellen Noreika, said it was too early to decide whether to appeal. Full Story
