Gaza’s healthy ministry announced on Tuesday that over 700 Palestinians died after significant overnight air strikes, marking the highest 24-hour death toll since conflict erupted on October 7. Israel said the strikes killed dozens of Hamas fighters, and that its war to destroy the Islamist group will take time.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently flew to Israel and stated France will support its war against Hamas. Macron also stressed the importance of fighting within the rules. The United Nations has not received safety assurances for its aid workers in Gaza, and WHO Regional Emergencies Director Dr. Rick Brennan implored Israel to allow a protected humanitarian operation. Any prospects of a ceasefire appear unlikely, and the UN estimated current levels of humanitarian aid will only meet a small fraction of need within Gaza. The Israeli military claimed that the overnight strikes killed three Hamas deputy commanders and destroyed a tunnel linking Hamas command centers to the Mediterranean Sea. Israeli armored forces remain positioned on the border ahead of a likely ground operation.
