Witnesses have said that a light aircraft carrying American officials on a routine anti-drugs mission in Colombia was fired upon by leftist rebels on Friday as it tried to make an emergency landing in rugged jungle terrain in the south of the country. Guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as Farc, were believed to have killed one of the Americans on board and a Colombian soldier before spiriting three others away. The US State Department demanded their immediate release yesterday. Witnessesdescribed seeing the plane, a Cessna, crashing towards the ground with engine failure. But 10 bullet holes in its right wing suggested that guerrillas had then fired upon it before dragging the passengers and crew from the wreckage. Full Story
