The three Americans believed kidnapped by Colombian rebels could be held as war booty by a guerrilla group that is believed to be making a major change in tactics to bring about an aggressive confrontation with Colombia and its main backer, the United States, political analysts and former rebels said today. The three were most likely taken captive by a battle-hardened unit of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, after their United States government plane crash landed on Thursday as a result of engine failure. They have been identified by American officials in Washington as Defense Department contractors and are believed to have been moved far from the jungle region where the plane went down. Today an estimated 2,000 Colombian troops searched a swath of southern Colombia, along with American rescue experts equipped with high-tech radio gear and guided by reconnaissance aircraft.
