The European Union is to work closely with US officials in order to set up IT systems to combat terrorism. The EU and US are to cooperate on an international passport database, but have acknowledged that more work is needed to achieve agreement over biometric IT, senior officials have said. In a “high level” meeting on 26 April 2004, heads of counter terrorism on both sides of the Atlantic discussed measures for using technology to improve security. Initiatives such as an international database for lost and stolen passports, cooperation on biometric technology and security systems for air and rail transport were all on the agenda. But while progress was made on the passport database, biometrics are proving to be more difficult to achieve consensus on.
