Syria and Iraq reached an agreement over the weekend that will allow Iraqi forces to attack ISIS forces inside Syria without having to first receive permission from Syrian authorities. The agreement illustrates the close relationship that has grown up between the two governments in their coordination of anti-ISIS efforts. The closeness has many concerned, however, due to the ease with which it could foster greater Iranian influence in both countries. Trumps announcement of troop withdrawal from Syria was accompanied by the plan that US soldiers based in Iraq could launch cross-border operations when necessary, something that is opposed by many Iraqi politicians and may be jeopardized by the Iraqi-Syria friendship.
