Pompeo announces ‘countdown’ clock as Iran weapons embargo ends in 2020

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday urged the United Nations to extend a weapons embargo on Iran that is set to expire in 2020, which will mark five years after the adoption of the Iran Nuclear Deal that was abandoned by the US last year.

Pompeo said that “time is drawing short to continue this activity of restricting Iran’s capacity to foment its terror regime,” and spoke of a countdown-to-terror-clock to track the time until the embargo expires.

Tensions between Iran and the US and its allies have escalated in the last months. In July, the US accused Iran of carrying out attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Since that month, Iran has also seized at least three foreign vessels in the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, the US has steadily increased sanctions on Tehran.
