Israel’s Netanyahu Fires Defense Minister, Citing ‘Gaps’ in Approach to War

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired his defense minister, Yoav Gallant. He made the announcement on Tuesday, citing gaps between the two officials in their approach to the ongoing war. Gallant had differing views from Netanyahu on how the war in Gaza should be conducted, as well as on domestic political issues. The announcement sparked protests across Israel. Gallant was supportive of a cease-fire deal to secure the release of Israeli hostages. His removal leaves behind limited proponents in the Israeli government for a similar agreement. The firing comes at a critical moment for Israel as it fights Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon while preparing for a possible Iranian attack. Additionally, the U.S. presidential election could have major repercussions for the war.
