The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine exist to provide the nation with independent, objective advice to inform policy with evidence, spark progress an innovation, and confront challenging issues for the benefit of society.

The academies recently completed a study at the request of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence focused on Encryption and the future of encryption given advances in technology. The academies brought together experts for a detailed study aimed at identifying potential scenarios of critical interest. They sought to assess the world 10 to 20 years from now and created several realistic scenarios to help assess the future. For each of these scenarios, this report, titled Cryptography and the Intelligence Community, identifies risks, opportunities, and actions. Attention to the findings should enable the Intelligence Community to prepare for the future and to recognize emerging trends and developments and respond appropriately.
