Trump-Kim summit breaks down after North Korea demands end to sanctions

The US-North Korea nuclear summit in Vietnam has come to a premature end. The North Korean delegation demanded that the US lift all sanctions on the regime, which the US government was not willing to do. US President Trump stated that while North Korean leader Kim Jong-un offered to dismantle the country’s main nuclear research and production site, Kim demanded complete sanctions relief in return. The Trump administration did not agree to this, in part because North Korea’s proposal did not cover other nuclear facilities in the country.

The described Korean proposal contrasts earlier claims by the US administration that before the summit, North Korea had agreed to fully dismantle its nuclear program if the country’s then still unspecified demands would be met.
