US Military Will Stop Using Floppy Disks to Operate Its Nuclear Weapons System

The Pentagon is finally abandoning its archaic nuclear launch systems that still rely on 8-inch floppy disks. According to an official, the Strategic Automated Command and Control System (SACCS) will start using a “highly-secure solid state digital storage solution” instead.

SACCS, the communication infrastructure that transmits emergency action messages for nuclear command centers, has been using outdated technology on purpose, claiming that this avoids exposing highly sensitive technology to security vulnerabilities associated with more modern technology. “You can’t hack something that doesn’t have an IP address,” Rossi said, adding that “it’s the age that provides that security.”
