Cambodia will start military conscription next year as tensions with Thailand persist

Cambodia to activate conscription amid Thai border tensions.

Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that Cambodia will begin enforcing its 2006 conscription law in 2026 after years of dormancy, citing recent armed clashes with Thailand as the driving force. Young Cambodians aged 18 to 30 of both sexes will be required to serve up to 24 months, with voluntary enlistment for women, to address personnel shortages and professionalise the armed forces. The government also plans to boost the defence budget and has demanded that Thailand reopen closed border crossings without conditions, promising swift reciprocal measures.
