Russia skirts Western sanctions to ramp up its military footprint in Africa

Russia is delivering sophisticated weaponry to sub-Saharan conflict zones.

Based on satellite imagery, Russia is transporting tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and other high-value military equipment via ship convoys to West Africa. The two-year-old Africa Corps, which has links to a covert branch of Russia’s army, is rising at a time when U.S. and European troops have been withdrawing from the region. Malian broadcaster ORTM confirmed that the West African nation’s army took delivery of the new military equipment.
