The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently assessed security defects in 1,062 drinking water systems. These systems are used by over 193 million individuals. The EPA discovered that around a quarter of these systems are vulnerable to hacker attacks. Such attacks could cause loss of functionality, customer information compromise, and denial-of-service (DoS) conditions. 97 of the water systems have critical, high-severity issues, affecting around 27 million individuals. Another 211 systems have medium and low-severity weaknesses. This report comes around one month after a New Jersey drinking water system fell victim to a cyberattack.
