European airlines resort to handwritten boarding passes amid system failures.
Starting late Friday, airports in Berlin, Brussels and London were hit by cyberattacks that disrupted Collins Aerospace’s check-in software, forcing airline staff to handwrite boarding passes and use backup laptops. Brussels Airport faced the worst impact, canceling 25 outbound flights Saturday, 50 on Sunday, and asking airlines to cancel nearly 140 departing flights scheduled for Monday. The U.S.-based software provider has been unable to deliver a secure replacement system, leaving airports to rely on manual check-in operations and alternative backup systems. While London’s Heathrow and Berlin’s Brandenburg airports showed signs of recovery by Sunday, Brussels Airport warned that cancellations and delays would continue as long as manual processes remain necessary.
