Heading into day six of AnMed’s cybersecurity shutdown, officials say they’re still responding to the attack. In an update released Thursday night, AnMed said in part, “We appreciate the community’s patience as our teams work around the clock to restore full, secure access as quickly and safely as possible. Guided by patient health and safety, we are making deliberate progress in our response. Federal, state and third-party investigations remain ongoing.” We spoke to cybersecurity expert Phil Yanov, with Tech After 5, who says a hospital system can be a great target for hackers. “If I take their data or I issue a ransomware attack, they’re going to take it seriously because it feels urgent; a hospital is a perfect target,” he says. “They’ve got names, they’ve got medical records, they’ve got all kinds of data on a bunch of people. Really personal stuff that I could sell.” “Here’s good news: there are laws in place that will require AnMed to notify all of their patients. Right. They are required to notify them by letter of everything that’s going on. So, they will give them a sense of how expansive the breach was, what data might actually have been lost on their behalf, and what they have to do about it,” says Yanov.
