DOJ targets organized ATM malware scheme.
The Justice Department has charged 54 people tied to a jackpotting operation run by members of the Tren de Aragua crime syndicate. Prosecutors say the group used Ploutus malware to force ATMs to dispense cash, with operators swapping hard drives or attaching external devices to deploy the code. Ploutus has circulated for more than a decade, with recent alerts pointing to renewed activity in the United States and Latin America. Recent incidents, including a $175,000 theft in Virginia, suggest the activity continued into 2025.
