Chinese EagleMsgSpy Spyware Found Exploiting Mobile Devices Since 2017

Cybersecurity researchers have found a new Android tool, called EagleMsgSpy, that functions as a surveillance program. The researchers suspect that Chinese police departments are lawfully using the tool to gather information from mobile devices. The tool has been in use since at least 2017. EagleMsgSpy collects data such as screen recordings, chat messages, audio recordings, call logs, and location data. It is able to obtain “real-time mobile phone information of suspects through network control without the suspect’s knowledge.” The researchers have attributed the program to Wuhan Chinasoft Token Information Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company.
