Cyberattack Disrupts University of New Mexico Hospitals as Extortion Group Claims Massive Data Theft

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) suffered a major cyberattack that temporarily disrupted hospital operations, forcing ambulance diversions and clinic cancellations. The extortion group “BYOD” claimed responsibility for the breach, alleging the theft of sensitive data including personal identifiable information (PII), Social Security numbers, and internal databases across campus and hospital systems. During the incident, attackers reportedly broadcasted synthetic voice messages on hospital workstations demanding administrative contact. Hospital IT teams and external incident responders worked swiftly to contain the breach, bringing systems back online in phases and restoring scheduled appointments. State and federal law enforcement agencies have been notified as investigations continue into the scope of the network compromise and unconfirmed data exfiltration claims.
