Hackers Drain Over $85 Million From Crypto Exchange Phemex

A cyberattack has led to the theft of over $85 million in cryptocurrency assets from Phemex, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange. The incident occurred on January 23, and the initial estimate of losses was $29 million. Multiple suspicious transactions were identified across several blockchains. However, over the weekend fraudulent transactions were identified across 16 blockchains, increasing the estimated losses to more than $85 million. Phemex stated that the attack was conducted by a sophisticated threat actor, but a known group has not yet been attributed. Given the precision of the operation, the heist is possibly linked to North Korea.
