Hackers successfully breached multiple South Korean financial institutions, including major lenders like Shinhan and KB Kookmin, exposing personal data belonging to roughly 68,000 individuals. Investigators examining the incidents discovered traces of a Chinese open-source penetration-testing tool known as Artex AI. Cybersecurity experts note that the intrusion marks one of the first major instances of advanced artificial intelligence being weaponized to automate financial system breaches at scale. While the targeted attacks compromised employee and loan sales-support systems rather than core banking infrastructure, they still managed to harvest sensitive user information. In response to the alarming escalation, South Korea’s National Police Agency and financial regulators launched an urgent, high-priority investigation.
