Investigators hunt French supermarket fridge hackers, no claim of responsibility

French investigators are hunting the hackers who remotely overrode refrigeration temperatures at more than 350 supermarkets, including Carrefour, Monoprix, and Intermarche, spoiling perishable goods across the country. Investigators say no group has claimed responsibility and no ransom was demanded, an unusual combination that has left them puzzled. The affected units ran software from the Danish firm Danfoss, which said many had reached end of life or were running outdated firmware despite publicly disclosed vulnerabilities in its AK-SM 800A controllers. Cybersecurity experts described the breach as a basic lapse in “cyber hygiene,” noting thousands of similar Danfoss interfaces remain visible on the public internet.
