The U.S. has sanctioned Iran and Russia for interfering in the November 2024 U.S. presidential election. The U.S. Treasury Department enacted the sanctions, claiming that organizations connected to the Iranian and Russian governments had deliberately attempted to influence the election’s outcome and divide the American people. Previously, in August 2024, multiple U.S. agencies had accused Iran of trying to undermine U.S. democracy.
