Massive Data Breach at Sony Network Communications Exposes 2.58 Million Records

A security breach at Sony Network Communications compromised approximately 2,585,481 customer records across Japanese internet service providers So-net and plala. Stolen data sets include full names, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, user IDs, and connection identifiers for both current and former subscribers. The unauthorized access also exposed working passwords for over 54,000 specific email service accounts and sensitive bank details for 16 customers. Sony confirmed that main membership account passwords, credit card numbers, and bank PINs were not stored or leaked in the incident. Sony shut down the compromised servers, forced password resets for affected accounts, and reported the breach to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission.
