A major cyber intrusion compromised the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), the Pentagon’s primary human resources and personnel tracking archive. Breach notification letters and internal reviews indicate that approximately four million current and former Department of Defense personnel and service members may be affected. Unauthorized actors gained access to files containing Social Security numbers, names, contact details, service records, and other personally identifiable information (PII). National security experts warned that the stolen personnel data could be weaponized by foreign intelligence services for identity theft, spear-phishing campaigns, and blackmail operations targeting military members.
