An investigation by cybersecurity researchers have found links between a 2016 crowdfunding scam and the 2023 fake IT worker fraud that was carried out by North Korean groups. Researchers identified that several North Korean groups were involved with this scam. The US, South Korean, and Japan have all issued warnings about the North Korean activity. They have particularly warned that groups involved with cryptocurrency are most likely to be targeted by North Korea.
