This week, South Korea’s privacy watchdog fined Meta $15 million for illegally collecting information on Facebook users. Authorities stated that the social media company has illegally collected sensitive personal information such as data about political views and sexual orientation. Meta has been sharing this data with thousands of advertisers. South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission conducted a four-year investigation on the incident. They concluded that around 980,000 Facebook users were impacted between July 2018 and March 2022. Meta failed to obtain specific consent to collect and use the sensitive information. Meta’s South Korean office has not yet responded to the commission’s decision.
