Two South Korean Churches Are Probing Suspected AI-Linked Cyberattacks

Two prominent South Korean churches, Seoul’s Yoido Full Gospel Church and Sarang Church, are investigating sophisticated cyberattacks that may have compromised the personal data of hundreds of thousands of congregants. Cybersecurity firm Oasis Security discovered attack logs, account information, and stolen data on an overseas server, noting that intrusion records contained clear signs of automated artificial intelligence tools, such as references to “sub-agents.” Yoido Full Gospel Church disclosed that initial analyses suggest records for roughly 850,000 members, including names, birth dates, and some national identification details, may have been exposed. The incident follows a recent wave of cyberattacks targeting South Korean commercial banks, prompting President Lee Jae Myung to warn that AI models are increasingly being weaponized in regional hacking operations. In response, church administrators have established emergency task forces, blocked unauthorized external access, and notified affected members.
