4 dead, 38 rescued during attempted channel crossing from France to UK

Migrants swept away while boarding boat on northern France coast.

French authorities say four people died while trying to board an inflatable “taxi‑boat” on Equihen Beach as strong currents pulled migrants away from shore. Thirty‑eight others were rescued, including one person in medical distress, while police and emergency crews continued operations along the long, hard‑to‑patrol coastline. The incident follows a surge in attempted Channel crossings, with more than 100 people rescued the previous day and two deaths reported last week. Rights groups say tighter French policing is pushing migrants toward riskier pickup‑style launches that increase the chances of drownings and injuries.
