Quake in Russia’s Far East sparks tsunami alerts
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Far East early Wednesday, the strongest since 2011, triggering tsunami warnings from Alaska to New Zealand. Japan’s meteorological agency recorded a 30 cm wave in Hokkaido while sirens blared in Honolulu. Russian regions closest to the epicenter reported damage and evacuations as residents stayed on high ground. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of waves up to 3 meters along several Pacific coastlines.
